South Surrey is NEXT!
SURREY MAYOR, BRENDA LOCKE ANNOUNCES NEW ICE SPORT FACILITY FOR OUR COMMUNITY.
Tuesday, November 4, 2025 (South Surrey/White Rock) – It was an exciting day for hockey, ringette, figure skating and other ice athletes this past week as the ribbon was cut and the new Cloverdale Sport and Ice Complex on 64th Avenue was official opened by the Honourable Mayor Brenda Locke. While the facility has been open for a few months, this marked its official opening, and it was celebrated by a lengthy list of Surrey Council members and MLA representatives. It also included British Columbia Premier, David Eby in addition to the community groups who will call the new facility home.
While the new facility will create additional opportunities for the Ravens to play closer to home, the big news of the day was Mayor Locke’s announcement that “South Surrey was next”. As the third largest minor hockey association in the province, Semiahmoo has one of, if not the, lowest ice available per user in the Lower Mainland with only two ice facilities available. Comparatively, the Township of Langley has eleven with two more ice sheets soon to open on the same property as the Langley Events Centre. Despite the shortage of ice, South Surrey and White Rock like Langley, is home to two junior hockey teams (White Rock Whalers of the PJHL, Surrey Eagles of the BCHL), which creates major stress on the facilities.
“A new facility has been something we have been working on well before my time in the Association,” Ravens Executive Director said that he began meeting with Surrey Councillor Gord Hepner almost immediately after he started in the role four years ago. “To get to the point where we are today and hear Mayor Locke announce that it is going to happen is very exciting. Councillor Hepner has been integral in getting this moving and we have appreciated Mayor and Council’s support and understanding of our community’s needs.”
While there no timeline yet, Mayor Brenda Locke continued to say “We really do have to build more facilities, including ice surfaces for Surrey. I would say that we can always build more — it’s insatiable, the need in Surrey, and that’s mostly because we’re a city of families.”
